There’s a story by O. Henry that he published in 1907. That story makes me emotional. It talks about two characters: a young girl and her neighbor, an old artist who’s dream in life was to paint a masterpiece. But he never did.
It was late fall. The girl got pneumonia, and after struggling for a while, she gave up. There were no antibiotics at that time. Every morning she was looking at the vine outside of her window, and she told everybody that she would die on the day the last leaf falls off that vine. And she was getting weaker. She was dying.
One morning, after severe storm, the girl asked to open the curtains so she could see the vine. All leaves fell off except one. One stubborn leaf kept hanging there in spite or the storm. It was there the morning next day, and the next. That was a sign. The girl regained the will to live, and she recovered from pneumonia. What a wonderful story!
What about the neighbor artist, you ask? Well, he died. He got seriously ill after spending the night in a heavy storm outside, painting the leaf on the wall after the last one fell off. That was his masterpiece.
My friends, we have an amazing power, a key to happiness and suffering, even power of life and death. We can talk ourselves into or out of practically any disease. Good news – it is totally up to us. Bad news – it is totally up to us.
We also have the power to affect other people’s lives. What we say and what we do may change somebody’s life. How about just giving somebody a smile today? Think about it.
