Can We Give a Gift of True Human Love?
Good morning, folks! I am Jin with Morning Mindfulness Podcast. Happy February! Let’s start it with a breath and a smile.
One of the greatest writers who affected me as a teenager, was Victor Hugo, well known for his “Hunchback of Notre Dame”. No, no, not the Disney cartoon with lots of music and happily ever after. Hugo’s novels are not easy to swallow. You are literally living the character’s life as you’re reading it. And part of it stays in you. Forever.
Today I’ll talk about Hugo’s novel called “Les Miserables”. Amazing story! One of the main characters there is an ex-convict coming back after 19 years of imprisonment. Hotels would not let him stay in. He was cold, hungry and angry.
Until one nice gentleman let him in for the night. He slept, ate and left, taking silverware from that man’s home, just to be caught by the police. They recognized the silverware and returned it to the owner. Now, the ex-prisoner was going back to prison.
However, the owner looked at the thieve and said, “You forgot to take two silver candlesticks I also gave you.”
When cops left, he said to the guy, “Let the money you get for this silver help you become a good person. Go!”
My friend, I meet so many people talking about love, forgiveness, acceptance of the past. And that sounds so wonderful, until… they have to give somebody gift of love at their own expense. What happens to their graciousness then? I know I may be stepping on somebody’s toes right now.
Why don’t we learn to love each other all the time, not when it is socially convenient and economically feasible. Think about that.
