One day several years ago I was playing my Shakuhachi flute by the ocean. I was not performing, just practicing for myself. The sun already set, and there was practically nobody around. The wind was blowing at me from the ocean, as it usually happens in California. I could barely hear myself, so I did not worry that I could bother anybody.
Once I stopped, I noticed an older couple walking along the shore line. “Thank you for your wonderful music,” they said as they got closer, “you made our day.” “Thank you”, I replied. I was surprised they could hear me playing. Perhaps the wind carried my sound in that direction.
When I think about that evening, I get emotional. I know somebody may think this was not a big deal. I hear you. I think it was around that time when I began playing solo meditation music in various studios. So for me it was the answer to the the question, “who in the World would ever need my humble sounds?”
As they were walking away, peacefully talking and holding their hands, I was looking at them and thinking “Thank you, you’ve just made my day too!..” And I believe, just because I am still thinking about them 10 years later, they made more than just a day.
My friends, I met so many people who surround themselves with a wall of fear and doubt. I can see it, I recognize it, because I am one of them. And if you are inside your wall too, I can tell you from my own experience: people need what you have. You don’t need to play the flute. Simple “hi how are you?” will do. Show them you care. Or just smile. Don’t be afraid to take a step outside that wall you built, because you may just change somebody’s life. Or somebody may change yours. Think about it.
