021 – The Trap of Certainty. About the Strength of Water and Stone
Good morning, folks! I am Jin with Morning Mindfulness Podcast. I hope you are doing great wherever you are! Let’s start with a breath and a smile to a new wonderful day!
When I talk to people about water, whether it is in the context of martial arts or stress management and communication, I often ask, what will happen if the rock falls into the water?

Almost everybody answers, that the rock will sink immediately. Of course, but what we see here is an example of a linear thinking. One action – one solution. And this concept may seriously hurt us in life by making us not flexible. We just take whatever is the most obvious and make it the only acceptable solution.
I’ve seen large boulders the water pushed out of the way. So, what may happen to the rock? I would answer, it depends on the shape and size of the rock. Also, are we talking about still water, slow river or fast stream? What is the shape and inclination of the river bed? There’s a big chance that the powerful stream will push the rock out of the way. For how long? For as long as the force of the resistance is less than the strength of the water. After that the water won’t care about the rock any more, and will find its way around it basically without changing the speed.
Yes, the water can be very powerful. Look at tsunami or even broken dams. But the lesson for today is never limit yourself to one possible solution or explanation. Push the obstacle, or go around. Whatever is easier. Don’t just stumble around. Keep moving. Be flexible and persistent. We’ll talk about it later.
— Learn to think of any possible outcomes, because often the smallest oversight may create the biggest challenges. I will discuss the concept of lateral thinking later.
