081 – The Path of Learning: Single Mindedness vs Jack of all trades

Is single mindedness better then wide spectrum on knowledge?

I’m sure, most of you have heard a statement “Jack of all trades, master of none”. Usually it is used to describe a person who is doing too many things, but who cannot excel at any of them because of dispersed attention. I understand that, I know I can do many things, but I cannot do everything.
But I like learning. I learned several professions. I am not a real master at ALL of them, but what I know was enough to save me economically when I immigrated to the US. In fact, my whole immigration was based on things I learned outside of my primary occupation, just because I was curious. So if somebody throws at me “Jack of all trades” line, I respond with “Eggs in one basket” line. Fair enough?
I don’t like single specialty. You can call me Jack if you want. Or MacGyver. Or whoever. Huh!
I don’t study all things with equal intensity. In some of them I have to go deeper, focus and practice them every day. Others things I like keeping as electives. I spend some time studying, just enough to know what it is.
I’ve been practicing Yoga, Martial arts, Tao Yin, Qigong, Taoist and Zen practices and many other things. Not that I am practicing every discipline one hour a day. There will be not enough hours in a week to study everything. But all this knowledge helps me to develop a better picture and understand how one philosophy relates to another. That is enough for me to better see my main Path. I don’t need to be an expert in every area. Remember the tree, it has many roots, but those roots have different length.
Does it make sense? Hope it does. So, my tip for today is: Never be afraid to learn.

Now let’s breathe and smile. I will talk to you next time.
PEACE!
