I think all kids have dreams. I sure had mine. Did you?
Dreams are great! I still have lots of dreams. However, most of dreams will never come true unless we turn them into clearly defined goals. Sorry to burst your bubble.
You may say, Jin, you said before, I just have to think about my dream all the time and they will come true. Yes you have to think, but thinking is not the only thing to do. You’ll have to get you fanny off the couch. Besides, thinking about your dream on daily basis is, in fact, planned activity. Very few people do it.
Let’s say I want to get on the top of Mt. Everest. It’s a decent goal, isn’t it?
As I learned from my coaches, I need to plan big but work small. I may have astronomical size goals, but getting there is too much of a leap for me. I need to define plan of action and set some intermediate achievable goals.
My coach told me that goals should be within sight but out of reach. Just like climbing the mountain. The ultimate goal is the summit, this what sets you in motion to begin with. But when you start climbing, you set your eyes on certain point. It takes work to get there, and once you do, you reset your goal. You don’t keep your eyes on the summit at all times. It’s useless at the moment even though summit is your real goal.
Setting goals in life is very similar. The top is an ultimate goal, but not a target for today. We set bite-size goals. We split them into small daily activities. Will people doubt our success? Yes! Will we lose the sight of the goal sometimes? Yes. Will we have to go on faith sometimes? Yes. Will we have to stop? Yes.
Can we fall? Sorry, yes! What should we do? Get up and keep going. It would be great to find a coach who’s been already where you are going. But no matter what you do, in your mind you should have a clear picture of your destination point for today. And if it gets too confusing, get together with a coach and simplify the plan. Make sure you have in your mind a very clear picture of your next achievable goal. Hope it makes sense.
