Many years ago I read the book called “What to say when you talk to yourself” by Dr. Shad Helmstetter. The author was stating that 75% of conversation is actually a talk to ourselves. I believe him. We are constantly talking to ourselves.
I already started this conversation in my previous episodes, and today I will give you a couple of practical advices I’ve learned so far.
Our mind believes anything we tell ourselves long enough. So if you keep repeating the same line again and again, the brain will start adjusting how our body is functioning to match the description.
So the first advice is to cap the negative coming from outside. That may be radio, TV, newspaper, even friends.
Second, create positive affirmation cards. There are books about that, and I will be talking more. But the idea is to write positive statements on the card and, listen to me, read this card every day. Even more, carry it with you and read it periodically.
Basically, self-talk is a way to program ourselves to believe and to do anything we need. I’ve bought several CDs with pre-recorded talk designed as a self-talk. Topics are different, from financial and business success to family issues and weight loss.
Listening is not exactly the same as reading and speaking out loud, but according to Dr. Helmstetter, it works too.
The main rule to remember in these kinds of talks, the statements have to be made in a present form, like it already happened. As we are repeating self-talk, our brain starts working accordingly. For example,
“I am organized”
“I am always coming on time”
“I am a great communicator”
And so on. This is not a mystery, this is a psychological phenomenon. Try it some time if you haven’t.
