#16 – Path into the Oriental Garden – Listen to the Music Set in Stone
First of all, Oriental Garden it is quite a generic name. There’s no single design. There are many different types of garden. Some of them are designed for nice slow meditative walk. And they are called stroll garden. They do require pretty large space. They usually have a pond or even a small lake as one of the elements.
Another kind of garden is attached to tea house, and it is called tea garden. It has its own very specific elements. People who come to tea ceremony will go through the garden, and it will set them in a very special mood. The size of this garden is relatively small, like the size of a back yard of a typical house.
What is much smaller, is a courtyard garden called tsuboniwa. I see it as some kind of a transition between real garden and a flower arrangement. Tsuboniwa can literally be set up on 2 sq. ft. of land, practically anywhere. It may have just one or two elements. But the arrangement is the key. Like a flower arrangement, it requires precise balance of elements and space, taking surroundings in consideration. This way tsuboniwa becomes part of the environment, not a stand alone project.
These are just examples. We will be talking more in details about types of Oriental Garden, arrangement of elements etc., in the future. And that will be video podcast, I need to show, not just talk.
What makes Oriental Garden so different?
Any kind of art is a reflection of the artist’s mindset at the moment that piece was created. The artist takes the vibes resonating inside of him or her at the moment of inspiration, and projects them out in a form of music, painting, carving or anything else. And when people get in contact with that piece of art, they basically receive an imprint of the vibes. This is how artist’s mood get transferred into other people.
Most of the art forms make this imprint from the outside. We just look at the art. Music, however, surrounds us, and we can feel the vibrations.
When we are in the garden, we become part of the arrangement. We are inside of the picture, surrounded from all sides. Sometimes I call the garden music set in stone. As I mentioned before, in meditational music, silence is the main part. And in Japanese garden, space is the most important element. This is why I call garden stone music.
