Here’s a thought of the day for you. Most of our body cells are getting replaced on a regular basis. Some cells live several days, others – several years. And some cells, like neurons for example, never replace, as far as I know. I am not going to speculate on scientific topics today.
The question is, if our cells are getting replaced, why are we aging? Our skin is being replaced on regular basis, why is it looking older with age?
I think the question is much greater than the person trying to discuss it today. But the topic of longevity and immortality has been boggling people’s minds for many, many centuries.
According to the legends from ancient healing arts, people used to know ways to extend their lives. In fact, some of those techniques I’ve been practicing in my training. As my teacher said, our school’s name was The Way of Long Life, and followers were called immortals.
No, I am not starting pseudo-scientific discussion about human longevity today. If fact, scientists are studying genetic mechanism of aging. There’s a theory that we have a gene which is responsible for starting mechanism of aging. I read in the article that this process was identified and even reversed in mice. How long will it be until we discover this in us? I don’t know. Maybe we already did? But I am suspecting that our ancestors knew that already.
When I asked my teacher, is it really possible to be immortal like ancestors? He answered with his Taoist wisdom and some sense of humor, “if you lived where they lived, did what they did, didn’t do what they didn’t do, ate what they ate and trained the way they did, perhaps you could. But would you really enjoy that life?” I let you think about that too.
