148 – Mindful Planning: 3 Simple Steps to Make Your Day More Productive

Yesterday I promised to elaborate on prioritizing and categorizing daily tasks. This is what worked for me really well, especially when I was going to the university full time, training 3-5 hours a day and reading the whole bunch of books at the medical library. Busy enough? Oh yeah, I studied English on the top of that. By myself mostly.
I would begin with setting priorities. Not numbers as usual, but rather, identify immediate need, must do, should do, want to do, like to do, wish to do.
My next step is to divide all activities into Movable or Not Movable categories. Some things I had to put on the schedule, like classes. I could not move them. But many others I call “fillers” and use them to fill in the spaces. Reading books, studying for the classes could be somewhat flexible. My English mostly came out of the filler category. As well as many other things I moved around the schedule. Today I like listening to the recordings of my coaches while I drive, or reading books whenever I have downtime.
#3 is huge for me. Is there a potential for a long term benefit or am I just going through the motion? This is where honesty and gut feeling come together. This is how I can do more productive things by eliminating waste of time.
But it may be tricky. Back to my English study. It began as a hobby first, and over 20 years ago that hobby was responsible for turning my entire life and career literally upside down. And I have several examples of how some of my hobbies became priorities and turning points in my life. We’ll talk about it one day.
