Today I will talk about one of my favorite concepts. The concept is living in the present moment. Living Now.
One of the phenomena of human mind is that we constantly return in the past. We’re thinking about what happened or what could’ve happened yesterday, a week ago, last year, etc. Also we may be fantasizing about the future.
My personal approach is based on the belief that everything has time and place. Zen practice is good for… Zen practice. It doesn’t mean that all I do all day long is count my breath or listen to the sounds of Nature. I am not at the temple, and life today is more complicated than chopping wood and carrying water even if I am trying to simplify it. Then how can we define the Path of Mindfulness?
I’m trying to use common sense, just paying attention to what I am doing at the moment. It may be watching the road when I am driving. Or working when I am working. Let my mind be on the subject I am studying at the moment.
Sometimes I take a walk as an exercise. Should I pay close attention to every step I take? If I do specific walking meditation, then yes. But I also may be thinking about something while I am walking. Remember, “Think” in Latin is “meditari”, which is an origin for the word “meditation”. So while thinking about something I am indeed practicing meditation.
We may be setting future plans, goals, setting plan of actions, etc. This all can be considered as being in the moment. Dedicated thinking time is indeed, a meditation. As opposed to chaotic thinking about multiple different subjects simultaneously. Then we may be just wasting our energy.
We’re talking about power of the moment, about living NOW. Is going into the past always bad? Not at all. There’s even a specific type of meditation that entails going into our past in our mind. Very powerful technique that helps to change our perception of some past life events. But this is not dwelling on the past. This is a structured meditation technique preformed during designated Present moment. We’ll talk more about that.
