Disastrous Assumptions in My Life…
Good morning, folks! I am Jin with Morning Mindfulness Podcast. Hope you are doing wonderful wherever you are! Let’s breathe and smile.
Today I’ll continue the topic I started this week:
#191 – http://hpln.org/destructive-miscommunication-sabotaging-success/
#192 – http://hpln.org/communication-barriers/
One of the biggest obstacles in a way of my success has been a habit called Assumption. Oh yeah! You’ve heard the saying, assumption is a mother of all.. mistakes.
And I’ve done it. A lot! Usually not with a technical stuff. My dad taught me, measure seven times, cut once. So I was growing up being a perfectionist. Measure and re-measure. Perhaps, borderline OCD.
And with technical things it was easy! I had a total control. At least what I thought.
With people, however, it was totally different. I did not have any idea how to “measure them”. And that was when I resorted to assumptions.
My communication skills used to be a total disaster. On one hand, I was assuming what people thought and wanted to say or do. But on the other hand, I was assuming how people were perceiving me. And trust me, that did not improve my self esteem. No wonder as a kid I was a social reject. I was the one responsible for that.
I see so many people live by assumptions. Unfortunately, even health and wellness practitioners. Even those who call themselves “spiritual”. Not everybody, but some. And once we label somebody, it is so hard to un-think and see them from a different perspective.
My friend, don’t fall into that trap. It may produce devastating results.
Here’s a book I really recommend to read (you can get FREE audio book). I am studying it now, and I am really excited.. I wish I knew it long time ago!
