Destructive Miscommunication: My Own Lessons
Good morning, folks! I am Jin with Morning Mindfulness Podcast. Hope you are having a marvelous morning! Let’s breathe and smile.
Communication has never been the strongest skill in our family, so I grew up thinking I was a poor communicator. I was one of the best students at the medical school in Europe. I read every book on the subject I could find, and then some. In fact, I was invited to teach at the same medical school, so at the age of 23 I was an assistant professor, teaching students, seeing patients and working on my PhD.
Nevertheless, it took me 20, maybe 25 minutes to break the silence when I got my first group of students. Quite uncomfortable moment, I must admit.
When I first came to the US in 1995, my friend took me to his Church and Sunday School. He noticed I was sitting by myself in the corner.
“Go talk to people,” he said.
“What should I talk about?” I asked.
“Anything. Small talk. Weather perhaps.”
“Why should I talk about weather? They can look outside and find out.”
I am not joking. That was me. Fortunately, as I found out later, connecting is a skill. It can be developed. Thanks God!
When I was reading John Maxwell’s book “Everyone Communicates, Few Connect”, I wanted to say, “John, did you study me as a role model for the mistakes you are writing about?” I think I got them all covered. Huh!
We live in the society where neither you nor I can succeed in life without successful communication with other people. That’s why I keep talking about it.
Here’s a book I really recommend to read (you can get FREE audio book)
“Everyone Communicates, Few Connect” by John Maxwell
