Our Destructive Memories
Good morning, folks! I am Jin with Morning Mindfulness Podcast. Hope life is treating you great in your corner of the World! Let’s breathe and smile.
I cannot speak for everybody, but I am guilty in dwelling on the past. Something would happen, and then I would go for quite a while thinking about what happened, re-living the moment, trying to analyze, come up with various solutions what I could’ve should’ve would’ve said or done instead of what I did.
I was reading a book by one of our coaches, and he wrote, nothing is as far away as one hour ago. He wrote, avoid lengthy thinking about the past.
Dwelling on the past is like trying to drive your car while staring in the rear view mirror. It won’t take you far ahead. It may get you off the road instead. In fact, people who look back all the time, most likely will go backwards in life.
Another statement I got from the book, is that thinking about the past makes us powerless. Yes, I’ve experienced that myself. And first I could not figure out what was wrong. I was feeling helpless. Whatever happened – happened. My controlling ego realized that I was not in control, and I had no power to change anything. I don’t know if it was just a deep sadness or borderline depression. I had to kick my own butt a couple of times to snap out of that. And what I noticed for sure, I need to get my mind away from the past, especially from some unpleasant events that my ego sees as hopeless inevitability.
For me personally, in order to stay sane and keep going, feeling energetic, I need to have dreams to look forward to, and to stay creative in a present moment. What is it for you?
Here’s the book I was talking about:
“The Pursuit” by Dexter Yager
