There’s a saying, if you found yourself at the dead end, there’s at least one way out – the way you came in.
What can we do if we get to the dead end? Let’s state the obvious: we cannot proceed any further. I often see people do this – and I’ve been there too, trust me – we start reasoning. We tell ourselves that we are doing OK.
Here’s a tricky part: are we really at the dead end or is it just a temporary obstacle? Should we keep pounding on the wall or should we admit this is the dead end and turn back?
I’ve read the story about a man who sold his mine literally for pennies. He gave up when he was several feet away from diamonds, and his successor got the richest diamond mine in South Africa.
So, how can we determine, should we keep digging or should we turn back? Not an easy question to answer. And certainly I am not aware or a blue print that fits every scenario. What I can tell you though, pounding your head on the hard wall just for the sake of motion is not a productive use of time. Any success is based on try-fail-adjust formula. So, whatever you do, are you learning something from your failures? Are you adjusting?
The best thing would be to find somebody who did what you are trying to do and ask them how they got where they are. Another option would be to find a coach who can help you to identify your blind spots and set up a plan of actions for you.
But what if you are like Walt Disney? What if nobody’s done it, and the whole world is telling you that you are crazy? I think the biggest criteria would be, do you have a clear vision or what you are trying to accomplish, and do you have a plan to make it happen?
Well, whether you are digging for diamonds, or coming up with a new Disney or trying to figure out how to escape a dead end job, the first option would be to stop and think. Get information. Analyze. Explore various options. Believe you can do it. And, most likely, keep digging. Perhaps the dead end is just a road block, and you can take a detour.
Hopefully I inspired somebody to think today. We’ll definitely talk more about that in the future.
