Many years ago my teacher told me to take some time at night to reflect on the day I was about to complete. And this is what I’ve been doing for quite a while. In our school it is a form of meditation on the past.
It is quite simple to do. Before I go to bed, I first take several minutes of quiet time to think about previous day. Bigger picture first, then after I set major markers on the timeline, I go through some minor details. I even try to recreate certain events in my memory with as much details as possible.
Why? I can think of several benefits besides simple memory exercise.
Analyzing my mistakes and learning from them would be the first one to mention. Not to dwell on them, just acknowledge. Learn.
Perhaps it would give me possible alternatives to what I’ve done, and hopefully some new ideas for the future. Maybe something I could’ve done different. Perhaps something I should do in addition to what I’ve done. This helps to develop what I call parallel thinking, which basically is a flexibility of a thought process.
Sometimes reflection can reveal tiny details I missed first, and that may drastically change the perspective. But even if it doesn’t, second look at certain events, from a different angle and in the bigger picture may change the perception of the significance of the event. Like, why did I even worry about that?
Try it some time. Just remember not to stay in the past. Look at it, think and let it go. Let me know what comes out of this if you try.
