098 – Uncommon mindfulness: Being selfish for the sake of others
Good morning, folks! I am Jin with Morning Mindfulness Podcast. Hope you are doing great in your corner of the World! Let’s breathe and smile.
Today I’d like to give you a bit unusual advice: be selfish. Let me explain what I mean.
Can being selfish be good?

I heard about being selfish for the first time from my Yoga teacher 30 years ago. The idea was simple: you have to take care of yourself enough to stay healthy and not to become a burden to your family when you get old. I know we cannot control many things, but everybody is capable of doing their best.
Loving the whole World is great! But nobody will come take care of your body or your mind for you. That is on your shoulders. Moreover, I am totally convinced that things like self-care, self-improvement, personal growth are our direct responsibility.
I’ve heard people say, “Jin, I don’t like the idea of being selfish”. I don’t know what you mean by selfish, but even famous selfless commandment “Love your neighbor…” ends with such a selfish statement “… as yourself.”
I strongly believe, and you may totally disagree, that we have to have something before we can share it. You cannot share money you don’t have. You cannot give love you don’t have. You cannot bring peace you don’t have.
This is what I mean by being selfish. You and I have to help ourselves to have in abundance what we want to share with others. I learned form Jim Rohn, that “Success is something you attract by the person you become.” Think about that.
Now, listen carefully, my friend: if you want to become successful in whatever you do – being an employee, or a business owner, or teaching yoga and martial arts, or preaching at Church, or being a doctor – you need to become selfish and work on yourself to become a better you. And if you already do, I salute you.
Read, listen to positive CDs, associate with people who will make you better, work on your health, exercise, learn dealing with stress, and so on. And if you don’t care about yourself, please never become my neighbor because I don’t want you to love me the way you love yourself.
Just joking, relax. But this is a serious talk, folks. You are the one responsible for your body, which is a temple of God. Hope it makes sense.

Now let’s breathe and smile. I will talk to you next time.
PEACE!
Jin
