Many years ago, my teacher told me, “Don’t be too hard because hard can be broken. Don’t be too soft, because soft can be bent. You have to learn to adjust according to the situation. Once you become flexible, you’ll be virtually undefeatable.”
Well, much easier to say than to do. But that brings us back to the topic of being like water. It is very soft, but it is also hard enough to destroy the stone. Water cannot be compressed. It will take any shape and will still be the water.
For a long time I’ve had an image in my head of what this flexibility may look like in real life. It may sound funny, but that image is Terminator T-1000. Yep, a liquid metal dude. If you haven’t watch the movie, please do! That’s classic!
If you have, do you remember how easy T-1000 was changing from flexible to rigid state? I remember the moment he got hit with a pry bar by good Terminator. The transformer let the bar pass through his body, come out on the other side right into his hand. That was exactly what I felt when I was sparring with my teacher: he was so soft and unpredictably transforming, so I could not figure out what was going on.
OK, back to the topic. The only way that I am aware of to really avoid breakdown is to become flexible. It is not easy to do though. What I like about martial art I am practicing, it is teaching physical and emotional flexibility. Those are two facets of our life, and they are very tightly connected. In fact, I teach stress handling and communication through principles of martial arts.
If you ever get to Phoenix, let me know, I can show you what I mean.
