About the Art of Reprimand
Good morning, folks! I am Jin with Morning Mindfulness Podcast. Hope you are having a wonderful day in your corner of the World. Let’s breathe and smile.
Again, thanks everybody who’s watching my live Periscope broadcast. Find me on Periscope @HPLN.
Have you ever been reprimanded by somebody? Like your parents or boss? Have you ever had to reprimand somebody?
I’ve been on both sides of the fence. And I’ll be honest, I don’t like either one. But I’ve also seen people who could hit you really hard, but it was almost pleasant. Like a massage for the ego. So today I will talk about the art of reprimand.
A number of years ago I got the book called “Be a People Person” by John Maxwell. These are some rules I learned that will work great when dealing dealing with employees or even children.
1 – Never ever ever reprimand in public. Do it privately. But praise publicly whenever you can.
2 – I should not reprimand for the accident or mistake that I could’ve done myself.
3 – Stop nagging, for crying out loud! One mistake – one reprimand. Period. Case closed.
4 – Always be specific. I’m not addressing somebody’s poor performance. This is about specific issue, like coming 15 min late to the meeting.
5 – Don’t generalize, like “You’re always late” or “You never pay attention”
6 – Finally, be constructive! I am not against the person, I am just trying to correct an issue. So I learned so called “sandwich technique”. It has 3 layers:
- Notice and comment on something good the person did. At least good intentions.
- State the specific issue we need to address. Again, not the person, but the issue.
- Ask that person’s suggestion regarding how can we constructively solve this issue. You may be surprised how creative and productive people get.
Hope it helps.
