I’d like to talk about some of the greatest systems created to keep people healthy, and I will start today with my favorite one, which is Qigong.
The word Qigong literally means Skill with Energy. Qigong is the art of dealing with internal energy by using movement, breathing and imagination. Quite often Qigong and its predecessor, Tao Yin, are called Taoist Yoga. Indeed, there’s quite a bit of similarity in some exercises, and definitely the state of mind is similar. It is about finding the balance. Qigong is one of the parts of Chinese famous immortality system, known as Internal Alchemy.
I cannot explain the moves in the audio podcast. What I can tell is that Qigong is very different in different schools. It can be soft, hard, dynamic or static. You can train energy flow by just sitting and breathing, or you can learn how to break bricks. And everything in between. So if you tried and did not like, you may want to try another one. I know for sure I teach what is not usually taught in popular Qigong groups.
Why Qigong? It is very versatile. Chinese medicine is based on meridians. That is Qigong. Reiki practice – here’s energy flow again. Qigong is a basis for martial arts. It can be used as a form of quite effective physical training. I was even learning to use Qigong as communication tool dealing with other people. I basically was introduced to it through my martial art practice. That was the main reason I stopped doing Khatha Yoga – why do I need to practice different systems for healing, for body conditioning and for self-defense if I can use one to get the same benefits?
Qigong is non-religious. It has nothing to do with salvation, reincarnation or any other spiritual practices. Just like breathing. We breathe for our bodies. Same goes about Qigong. It is a way to keep the body healthy. It is a way to improve circulation, to stimulate lymph flow, to synchronize work of the muscles, to improve body flexibility, and many other things.
Qigong can be practiced by anybody in any physical condition. OK, here’s a disclaimer: check with your doctor, alright! But literally, if the person can breathe, he or she can get benefits of Qigong practice. Simple as that.
I will be talking more about benefits of Qigong, about Tao Yin, Internal Alchemy and longevity, and many other really cool things. So stay tuned.
