About Mindful Decisions
Good morning, folks! I am Jin with Morning Mindfulness Podcast. What a fabulous Friday morning! Let’s breathe and smile.
When I was growing up, we had popular kids and not so popular ones, which I was a part of as well. The problem was, not so popular kids sometimes were trying to do things to mimic “popular” ones. They might smoke, drink alcohol, and do other things that could get them in trouble.
When I went to the university, I remember several of us were at some kind of a students’ party. Well, every night they had some kind of a the party anyway. But that night was special. At least for me.
My classmates knew that I was not drinking alcohol. At all. So a couple of guys and a couple of girls brought me some of Vodka in a cup. Everybody should feel home at the party, right? I don’t think it is easy to resist when you have a couple of young girls telling a guy that real man has to drink at least a little bit.
So I had a cup with vodka in my hand, two young girls, one on each side, two encouraging friends, and I was rationalizing my actions. It’s OK to try, all right. But I put the cup down and said NO. Just because it was my decision, my principle.
Several weeks later one of the students who had drinking problems, met me at the hallway. He was not at the party.
“I’ve heard what happened,” he said. “Let me tell you how much I respect that.” And he shook my hand.
That totally changed my perspective on being “COOL”. It’s not how popular you are, folks, it is how stable your position is. It’s how strong your values are. I’ve learned a good side and, unfortunately, an ugly side of this rule.
Never try to mimic somebody. Be yourself, have strong values and protect them!
