The Art of Mindful Teaching
Good morning, folks! I am Jin with Morning Mindfulness Podcast. Hope you’re having a fantastic day! Let’s breathe and smile.
I’ve been teaching, coaching, educating people for number of years. And I can tell you from my experience, that loving your subject and even having passion about it has nothing to do with the ability to teach, whether 1-on-1 or in groups. It is not about what you say, it is about what they hear.
As I conduct my classes and workshops, I am trying to implement communication principles I learned from John Maxwell. These are 5 points I’d like to share today.
1 – Communicate in their world. It is my responsibility to know who’s in the audience and what they expect from me. It is good to find out something in common so we can connect outside of the main subject.
2 – Keeping simple has been a problem for me. I have a tendency to overdo, like I am getting paid for the humber of words I deliver. Huh! I had to learn to be simple and to reduce my presentation to several easy to remember points.
3 – I like being visual and using analogies. I have to be careful though and remember who I am talking to so my examples and metaphors are helpful and not more confusing.
4 – Using stories, especially humorous ones from my own experience, significantly increases the chance to convey my ideas. Emotional component makes learning much much stronger.
5 – I like asking people for feedback, questions, suggestions. My presentation is learning experience for me, and I like to know what I can do to better help people I am talking to.
I will be talking more on that, just want to keep it simple today, all right.
Here’s a book by John Maxwell I Mentioned (free audiobook from Audible through Amazon link below):
“Everyone Communicates, Few Connect”
Hope this helps!
