Skills of Clear Connection
Good morning, folks! I am Jin with Morning Mindfulness Podcast. What a terrific day today is! Getting hot in Arizona! Well, Let’s breathe and smile.
Long time ago I noticed that sometimes I may be in a place, even a totally new place, but some small details bring back long-long time memories. I might’ve been 3 or 4 years young. And I still remember.
Those details may be something I see, like landscape. Or hear, or smell, like specific flowers. But often I think for me it is a combination of several senses that brings back those early childhood memories. And I think visual is dominating in my case.
I read in the book, that people use different representational systems as their primary basis for thoughts or feelings. They can use sight, hearing, touch, smell and taste. Even in a verbal communication. Just imagine you’re going on vacation. Tomorrow. What are your thoughts? People may say
“I can already envision that beautiful sunset on the beach” or
“I can already feel that sand” or
“I can already taste that Pina Colada” or
“I can really smell the ocean”
People will express their representation system in the way they talk.
Why is it important? If you and I learn to recognize how people around us experience the World, we become much better communicators. We can literally speak with other people in their native language. Think about the significance of that for you personal or business relationships. For me, as a teacher, coach and speaker, this is huge!
The book I mentioned is called
“Am I Making Myself Clear?” by Terry Felber
Stop by Resources page to find more books I recommend I’ve read over the past couple decades.
