Communication Rule and Me…
Good morning, folks! I am Jin with Morning Mindfulness Podcast. Hope life is treating you well. Let’s breathe and smile.
Last time I started talking about communication mistakes I’ve made. Today we have another one, and it’s a biggie. Oh yeah! The question is, how important am I? Especially if I study a lot, get more degrees than a thermometer. Gosh, I’m smart. For sure I have to be leading the conversation. Right?
Not quite. And this has been a stumbling stone for so many people, including yours truly. I’d like you to remember one thing, my friend – a quote by Theodore Roosevelt, “People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.”
All the education and training you might’ve received is irrelevant unless you can demonstrate how other people can benefit from it. Conversation is based on them, not on you. Would you like to become an instant great conversationalist? Easy: start asking other people open ended questions about them. The only 2 times you can talk are when you are asked to talk or when the other person’s point or story resonates with you so much that you want to “Aha” it and let him know that this is a connection point. And be genuinely interested, don’t just ask for the sake of asking and getting a chance to talk about you. I tried it. Repeatedly. It doesn’t work well. And sure it doesn’t build a good reputation.
I’ve read many books about people’s skills since then. The one I’ll recommend today is a book by John Maxwell “Everyone communicates, few connect”. It is a great book, and I am reading it now, that’s why I talk about it.
here’s a link to the book:
