My First Communication Mistake – One of many
Good morning, folks! I am Jin with Morning Mindfulness Podcast. Hope you are having a wonderful day wherever you are. Let’s breathe and smile.
When I was growing up, I had never been a popular kid. Total introvert, homebody, a certifiable nerd. I won’t go into full story today, but you can imagine that even in such a slow pace 20th century, relating to people was the hardest thing for me. I had straight “A’s” at school, and I read every book I could find in the library on a subject I was studying at the university. But I did not have any friends. Do you know anybody like that?
No matter what I was trying to say, people didn’t really care. What should I do?
Well, I’ve learned a couple of tricks along the way. And I’d love to share it with you, my friend, in several next episodes.
One of my biggest communication mistakes was that I was putting too much emphasis on words. What should I say? What were those popular kids saying so everybody loved them? How should I say it?
John Maxwell wrote in his book “Everybody Communicates Few Connect” that words are only responsible for 7% of communication. Wow! I was looking at the wrong media. The remaining 93% is expressed through our body language and our actions. In fact, there’s a saying, “Actions speak so loud that I don’t hear what you say”. I had to learn to act normal, not being weird, like so many nerd guys I’ve met.
I’ve not arrived yet. But I am practicing what I am talking about here. I have my successes, lessons, bloopers. I got it all, some of them I will share. So stay tuned.
