I recently played music at the Japanese garden, and I had a discussion with a young guy about learning traditional style vs. just having fun and improvising.
Well, this question has been coming up for the past several decades, and I think it’s applicable to many areas of life, not just Japanese music or martial arts. Everything we learn or practice is a combination of opposite approaches: like Yin vs Yang, Deduction vs Induction, learning old vs inventing new. This is how we progress.
When it comes to learning, we have different approaches too. I’m not talking about visual vs audio, like we are use to. I am talking about what makes us interested to learn.
For example, I need to see practical application of the knowledge I receive, and I need it right away. I will learn basics to know what was already invented. Then I will try the examples, and I will push it the limits and create something to test my knowledge. And most likely I won’t do it the way described in the text book.
I like learning. One of the main reasons I stuck with martial arts and Japanese music is that they are challenging enough to keep me interested. Learning complex things is fun for me, I am having fun my way, otherwise I may lose an interest. That’s just me.
When I was at school, my math teacher was always giving me extra problems because she knew I’d get bored otherwise. And I sincerely believe that many kids who don’t do good at school, are not dumb. They are just too smart for the program, and they are getting bored and loosing interest. Our job is to find out what makes kids interested, and hopefully direct them accordingly. Think about that, my friend.
