I’ve been talking before about living in a present moment, about beginner’s mind. Today let’s look at the practical application of this concept.
Almost everybody I’ve met has a habit of dwelling on the past. We worry about whatever happened yesterday, or a year ago, or even last millennium. How about that! Indeed, everything that happened before and including year 2000, is a last millennium.
Why do we keep thinking about that? Whatever happened – happened. We cannot go back and change it. But we can affect our future by what we do today. I’ve heard a profound statement: “Today is the first day of the rest of my life.” Yours to, my friend!
No, We cannot ignore the past. If we don’t learn from our mistakes then we can make them again. I prefer to learn from other people’s mistakes, to be honest, because I won’t live long enough to make all of them myself. That’s another topic.
Yes, the Past is important. But let it stay where it belongs. Don’t dwell on it. And don’t make your today’s decisions based on where you came from. No matter where you are in life, there’s a way to draw the line in a sand and keep going forward. Make your decisions based on the future plans, not the past.
You may ask, “Jin, have you mastered the art of letting the past go?” Let me make it easy for you. No, I have not. I’ve had my share of self-blame, self-pity and lengthy trips into the past. That’s why I can talk to you today and tell you, there’s nothing constructive about living in the past. Think about that.
Thanks for tuning in! You can subscribe to my podcast on my site HPLN.org. Now let’s breathe and smile. I will talk to you next time.
PEACE!
