#8 – Traditions and Habits: Compromise or Sacrifice? What can we justify?
How much do traditions and habits affect our life? Do we know why we are doing things we are doing the way we are doing them? Who created the beginning? Should we follow the path or should we change? How much the way we live is affecting our life? Can we change it and why?
Today I’d like to continue the discussion about right and wrong. However, we will look at this topic at the different angle. We will be talking about Rules, Manners, Traditions and Habits. I am often asked a question: if we cannot justify acting against our nature, then how do we live in a society where we have to abide by the rules of that society? Are we compromising?
Well, we’ll talk a little bit about it today.
First of all, let’s look at water. Even though water can be pored into many different vessels, and it can take the shape of any vessel no matter how weird or strange the shape is, it still remains water. Changing the shape did not change it’s essence.
Sure enough if the the vessel is really dirty or rusty, then the water will become dirty. Eventually it will start smelling like the vessel it’s in. Like we become the product of our environment. And this brings us to the topic of my previous episode: if water is not running, then it will become stinky. It has to change. And if it does not change by replacing water, then it will change by changing the quality of the water in a vessel. But there is no status quo. People may think sometimes that changes have to be made actively. No, they happen whether you actively participate or not. All you can do is choose, whether to observe the changes and adjust, or stay ignorant and wait for surprise.
As I mentioned earlier, we use a lot of parables to discuss different principles the school was built on. I guess, now is a good time for another one of those stories.
One of the characters in our parables is a Wise Pig. Why Pig? I have no idea. When I was learning these principles, I was more concerned about getting the main idea of the story, rather than trying to study folklore and etymology.
So, here we go…
