Many years ago my teacher told me, “Don’t give advices. Smart man does not need them, and not so smart won’t use it.” He also taught me that people often much easier forgive us our failures and mistakes, than being right. He said, it is often better to let people make their own mistakes and learn from them, than get yourself an enemy just because you happened to be right.
People are stubborn creatures. They like giving advices and opinions. And I am guilty in that too. But I am trying to ask myself these questions now:
– Am I right for sure? I can be wrong like everybody else.
– Is my way the only way? Remember, 2+2=4, so is 3+1. Often there are multiple ways to reach the same goal.
– Does the person really need or want my advice?
– Why do I want to give an advice?
I understand, this may be a genuine desire to help a friend. That is great. But I also remember that wise man speaks when he has something to say. Others – when they need to say something. Think about that.
