There’s a great saying by Lao Tzu, “Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished.”

I see so many people constantly in a hurry. As a result they keep spinning the wheels, they get tired and frustrated, and often they don’t even accomplish much.
After three decades in martial arts, there are several principles I’d love to point out today. I think they are very important both for martial arts and for every day life.
First is timing. Not the fast speed, like some may think. Being too fast may lead to loosing in the battle as easy as being too slow. Over-reacting and under-reacting are equally dangerous in the fight and in life.
Second is accepting your opponent’s play. Remember, if you do that you will enter your enemy’s territory where he is very comfortable, and you are not. You have to create your own strategy and make your opponent fall into that.
Third, not playing to your strength. Remember Einstein: “If you judge the fish by its ability to climb trees, it will die thinking it is stupid.” What people often do? They don’t know what their strength is, and they just use whatever life sends their way.
Forth, underestimating your opponent. My teacher taught me always respect everybody, no matter who is in front or you. You just never know. Expect unexpected, be alert, be mindful. And don’t jump into conclusions.
Finally, never use more force than it is necessary for the task. If the fight is finished, if the conflict is resolved, it is time to stop, let it go and move on.
Hope my life changing lessons make some sense 🙂
I will be talking more about it in the future.
