I have a question which I think became a foundation of most of martial art discussions nowadays. That is “What is the best martial art?”
Oh yeah, I’ve seen fights initiated by this question. I’ve seen internet conversations literally exploding, overloaded by quite aggressive pleasantries. Perhaps every early Chinese martial art movie is based on a single statement: My Kung-Fu is better than your Kung-Fu. And the rest of the movie is just a long fight, which is so appealing to the macho spirit of masculine half of the society.
That would be all right. I like watching those movies too, like a nice fairy tale. But they also create a serious question people have been asking me for years. Which martial art is the best for self defense?
I’ve been in martial arts for over 30 years. I am not an expert in all arts by any means. I’ve learned a little bit about a couple of them, and I got familiar with another dozen enough to have my own opinion.
And my opinion, humble but accurate, is: Martial arts don’t win or lose. Humans do. Competition are not comparing martial arts. They are comparing humans.
So, the best martial art – ATTENTION please – is the one you practice regularly. Particular Schools may be emphasizing combat, sports or fitness aspects of the arts, that’s another story. But first you need to identify what fits you the best, what you like and what you will stick with. Then find a teacher and approach you like. And, the main thing, keep practicing. This is not about the martial art. This is about you, my friend, whether you like it or not.
Hope this helps a little.
