As I was saying last week, our life is a sum total of everything that goes into our brain through eyes and ears. Indeed, tv, internet, news, radio, negative coworkers… all this affects our life and makes us the way we are. We become the product of what we read and whom we associate with.
And yes, we can make our best to control those gates to our life. For me, I read self-development books and avoid newspaper, I associate with positive people from the leadership team. I don’t listen to the radio, and if I listen to the music, it has no lyrics in it. Just music, because in so many cases I don’t like the pop-songs lyrics anyway.
However, there one weak link we may easy overlook. That is our friends. Especially childhood friends. Or even relatives. We know them, we trust them. We are so used to socializing with them, and we may not even realize that they can be the biggest source of harmful emotions. And since we trust them, we don’t set any guard to protect ourselves.
That’s right, my friend. If you step on the Path of Mindfulness, if you are trying to develop a positive mental attitude, if you set and try to pursue your goals, you may notice that your positive attitude is literally getting neutralized and overpowered by negative emotions from the people closest to you.
It is not always easy to admit, and not easy to correct. I personally had to dissociate myself from some of my so called “friends” because I started disliking what they were saying or doing.
I cannot tell you what to do. I just told you what you need to know.
For myself I use simple formula: in case of negative friends or relatives, dissociate myself from those I can, minimize contact with those I can’t completely avoid, and to neutralize the rest – increase association with those who can help me to achieve my goals. Hope this makes some sense.
