What is Mindful Bravery?
Good morning, folks! I am Jin with Morning Mindfulness Podcast. Hope you’re having a fantastic morning! Let’s breathe and smile.
Many years ago my teacher told me a proverb about a snake charmer at the marketplace. And it was a talk about courage. So today I’d like to discuss it.
Definition of courage is, basically, ability to do something in spite of the fear.
I am not talking about situations when people risk their lives to save others. This is about every day bravery. It is about something we look at and think, “WOW, they must be so courageous to do it!”
I want to mention three different reasons for this every day courage.
One is ignorance. We even had a joke about a Monkey hitting the nuclear bomb with a stone. Somebody said, “It will explode!”
“Don’t worry,” Monkey said. “I got another one.”
Not seeing or not understanding the danger is very dangerous by itself. I know many cases of that, especially with bombs left after WWII.
The second one is mere stupidity. Not every ignorance can be fixed. Some people act brave because they have no concept of what they’re doing. My classmate at school tried to show off and rode his bike down the terraced mountain. In front of the girls, of course. Well, with just brain concussion and multiple fractures he got lucky, because his head landed about 1 foot from a pretty large rock. That 1 foot saved his life.
The third is knowledge
This is what snake charmers or animal tamers do. This is what fakirs do in the circus. They know the science behind what they are doing. That’s why I can tell you about some tricks: don’t do it at home.
Don’t just be like, “Yeah, I can do it!” Think, research, study before doing. It may sound obvious, all right. But people in groups 1 and 2 didn’t do it.
Thanks for stopping by.
