About Mindful Courage
Good morning, folks! I am Jin with Morning Mindfulness Podcast. Hope you are having a fantastic day! Let’s breathe and smile.
When I was growing up, I was not a courageous kid, not at all! And I think it started changing after I began practicing martial arts, little by little. I had to spar, and I was totally out of my element. I began going first to take exams at school. First in – first out. In my mind, anticipation was worse than the action.
I found out that I could stand up for my point of view and defend it publicly in front of the large group. Again, completely out of character for me.
I don’t know if it was the result of martial arts training, or I just grew up. But my teacher told me to do something I was afraid of, every day. Well, at that time I missed the “every day” part, but I did something.
Not long ago I was listening to one of my business coaches, who’s a very successful man. He said, courage is not a lifestyle. It is just a moment. Once you’re in – you’re in. But it takes courage to make the very first move and overcome anxiety.
About 26 years ago, I was coming home after my daily training almost at midnight in the winter. Somebody from a group of young men standing on the dark street threw a snowball at me from the back. They knew I was training, and it was several of them.
I turned around, walked towards them and asked confidently, “Is somebody tired of living?”
Nobody answered, and I went home. It took me a few seconds to realize my heart was pounding. But I felt that someone else went home inside my body after that.
Courage. It is just a few seconds that may change our life. Think about it.
