Don’t Let Yo-Yo Mind Determine Your Path
Good morning, folks! I am Jin with Morning Mindfulness Podcast. Hope life is treating you great! Let’s breathe and smile.
When I was a kid, we had this kind of a joke, pretty long one. Now I can find multiple versions online, but I’ll try to be brief with what I remember.
Supposedly, it comes out of the combat pilot’s report. Here we go:
“Flying to the base. Good!
The enemy’s right behind me. Bad!
I shot him. Good!
He shot me. Bad!
I am not hurt. Good!
The airplane is. Bad!
I managed to eject. Good!
Parachute’s not working. Bad!
I am falling right on the haystack. Good!
But there’s pitchfork on the top of it. Bad!
I missed the pitchfork. Good!
And I missed the haystack. Bad!
…”
And that goes on and on.
Many years ago that was somewhat funny. But what it really does, it amplifies and shows in such a humorous way our brain’s ability to switch opinion between good and bad.
This is what I see all the time. People make such a quick decisions, often without considering any circumstances and without waiting for or searching for any additional details. This is what I call “Yo-Yo Mind.”
I had some friends like that. Honestly, this type of decision making used to irritate heck out of me. I am phlegmatic / melancholic. And I like to plan. I even like to plan my planning activity. That’s kind of over the top, I agree.
But miking Yo-Yo decisions is not necessarily Mindfulness. If you’re practicing mindfulness and trying to find balance and inner peace, then maybe, just maybe, you want to think carefully before making decisions. Unless, of course, you’re falling on the haystack. With a pitchfork in it. Huh! Just saying…
