How can we apply an ancient wisdom?
Good morning, folks! I am Jin with Morning Mindfulness Podcast. Hope you are doing wonderful wherever you are! Let’s breathe and smile.
Long time ago I read an ancient fable about a Fox, supposedly written by Aesop. In that fable, a hungry Fox saw a nice ripe grapes hanging down from the vine. The Fox really wanted the grapes, however it was hanging too high. No matter how hard the Fox tried to jump, he could not reach it.
Finally, the Fox gave up, turned around and went away, after he made a remark, “It’s not even ripe yet. I don’t want any sour grapes!”
That was an ancient wisdom. But I think it is still as valid today as it was in 600 BC. And this is not something happening among kids on the playground. I see it in business and in life all the time. Perhaps you’ve seen it too.
People will ridicule whatever they don’t have persistence, work ethic or simply guts to achieve. And I am guilty too. I would try to find a reason not to pursue my goal because it was getting too hard or too inconvenient. Maybe this is not as good as I thought is was, I would tell myself. I was basically trying to convince my own consciousness that I did not need to do that for very specific legitimate reason.
Quite often I observe even more aggressive manifestation of this phenomenon. People will try to ridicule you, if you try to do something that may potentially, in their minds, make you look better than how they look. Because if your friend is a Fox, he or she will try to convince themselves that grapes are not ripe. And you, trying to achieve a very similar goal, may destroy this perfectly fabricated reason and make them feel not very good about themselves.
I’ve had such friends. Have you?
Think about that if your friends ever try to talk you out of pursuing your dreams.
