About Mindful Silence
Good morning, folks! I am Jin with Morning Mindfulness Podcast. Hope life is treating you great wherever you are! Let’s breathe and smile.
One day a young boy came to his father and asked, “Dad, what is the next thing a man needs to learn after he learns to speak?”
“To keep his mouth shut,” dad answered.
I read this story several decades ago, and over the years I’ve heard a number of similar statements, just in different words. I am sure you have too, like “Smart man knows what to say, wise man knows whether or not to say it.” There’s a long list of them.
As a practical person, I see several great benefits of controlling my mouth. These are just a few:
1. There’s a saying, “Long tongue is a gift for the spy”. By keeping mouth shut I won’t say something I should not. I wish I always remembered that.
2. Keeping silence allows me to connect with people better because I can hear what they are saying. I just let them talk about themselves.
3. If somebody’s saying what I don’t like, keeping the silence, or what my mom calls “counting till 10” allows me to avoid first reaction and saying something stupid I’d regret later. I definitely need to practice more.
4. Keeping mouth shut allowed me to avoid conflicts many times. It’s not being scared, but rather exercising my rights to stay away from stupidity.
5. In case of conflict I like keeping mouth shut so my opponents would either exhaust themselves or expose true meaning behind what they’re saying. I definitely need to practice more of that.
There are many more, but these are just to start with. Hope it helps somebody.
Thanks for stopping by.
