Dangerous Overreacting…
Good morning, folks! I am Jin with Morning Mindfulness Podcast. Hope you’re having a terrific morning! Let’s breathe and smile.
Have you ever tried to balance a thin stick on the tip of the finger? I did. I never got to the point when I could go and perform at the circus, but some people can do it, right? Others, like myself, can balance it for a while and then it falls.
I am teaching a stress management course, and this is one of the principles I discuss. Picture yourself of somebody else balancing the stick.
Let’s pretend the stick is falling to the right. Now we’ll move our hand to the right so the stick can stay vertical. However, in many cases we slightly overdo, and the stick starts falling to the left. Or forward. Or backward. Whatever condition we create by moving our hand. And for a while we try to move our finger around to keep the stick standing, until it starts swaying chaotically and finally falls.
That happens because first we are not paying attention to the earliest inclination of the stick. We react too late. And once we notice it, “Oh my goodness, it is falling!” we overcorrect, lose control and drop the stick.
We do the same in life. We are not paying attention to the present moment. And I am guilty too. And once we notice the change, it may be already too late. So we push ourselves into changes trying to maintain the equilibrium. And we often overdo. Then – Oops – we literally throw ourselves out of balance. Simple, but not easy to fix.
I am putting together FREE online stress management course, available by subscription only. Also I will be teaching the workshop on April 17th at Sumits Yoga in North Scottsdale, AZ. I’ll try to make it easy. So stay tuned.
Thanks for stopping by.
