Professional Mindfulness
Good morning, folks! I am Jin with Morning Mindfulness Podcast. April Fool! Let’s breathe and smile.
The topic for today, however, is quite serious.
I said it many times, I grew up being a perfectionist. I like precision and accuracy. I really enjoy precise work. One of my favorite crafts is making jewelry. Years ago, I spent quite a bit of time studying filigree, engraving, cutting and setting stones, and other aspects of the craft.
I think it’s all good. However, precision calibrated mindset does not have room for errors. And this is how I was growing up. Everything had to be absolutely perfect! And if it was not, then it was a sloppy job. That would irritate me and seriously undermine my self esteem. My ego told me that everything I did had to be perfect.
Not long ago, I was listening to one of my coaches. He really loves golfing, and he is taking lessons from the leading PGA TOUR golfers. He said that really good golfer makes five good shots during the tournament. That’s enough to win. WOW.
I also read long time ago, that really good professional basketball player misses 70% of his shots.
Here’s a point I want to make. These professionals have one thing in common: they are not emotionally attached to the misses. It is just a name of the game: do, fail, adjust, do it again.
Well, if you are a brain surgeon, them I’d rather have you practice failing on a manikin, not on a patient.
But in majority of cases, failing is not a fatal mistake. Don’t get emotional about it. Get up, adjust and keep going. Remember, it is normal. And there’s also a difference between perfection and excellence. We’ll talk about it later.
Hope it makes sense.
Thanks for stopping by.
