Many years ago I heard a saying, “If you have one clock, you know the time. If you have several, then you’re always in doubt.”
I totally agree! I see people get stuck in so called analysis paralysis. And trust me, I am the most guilty offender here.
Here’re some tips I’ve learned so far that help me to stop overthinking and move forward.
1. First, how important is the task? Is it buying a house? Getting married? Or just buying a piece of hardware for the computer?
2. What will be the impact of my decision, say in 5 years? Will it matter?
3. Is my decision reversible or not? And I had a habit of thinking about silly stuff like external hard drive, and I’d spend an hour at the store comparing different brands.
4. I don’t have to choose the best option. I had to learn to get what will work for me, and won’t slow me down. I remember I was buying iPod 12 years ago to play music at my office, and I had the option of 80 and 160 GB. I bought 80. I thought by the time I fill it up, iPods will become obsolete. I think I was not far from the truth. I put over 2500 pieces of music on it, everything I’ve ever bought for 20 years in the US, and it is not even half full. And you know what, I am not even using it any more.
5. Finally, after I make a decision, I don’t look back, unless there’s a real reason to go back.
Don’t complicate your life, my friends. Keep it simple and productive. Hope it makes sense.
